Bahamas Carnival and Junkanoo Are Not the Same

Both matter. Both are Bahamian in context. But they are different celebrations with different formats, calendars and histories — and visitors should not use the terms interchangeably.

Bahamas Carnival Mas

A Caribbean-style Carnival in Nassau

Bahamas Carnival Mas is a Caribbean-style Carnival celebration hosted in Nassau, The Bahamas. It features Mas bands, feathered costumes, soca-led fetes and a Road March through the city.

Junkanoo

A distinct Bahamian tradition

Junkanoo is a separate Bahamian cultural tradition with its own history, format and calendar. Bahamas Carnival Mas does not replace Junkanoo, and Junkanoo is not a "version of Carnival". Visitors are encouraged to learn about Junkanoo through official Bahamian tourism sources.

We link to official Bahamian tourism information rather than repeat unsourced descriptions.
